Renting a car in Dubrovnik Airport
Dubrovnik Airport is a legitimate route into a Budva stay when the northern-European carriers only fly to Croatia. Pickup happens inside the arrivals hall at DBV; the driver hands over the car in the short-stay lot outside and you drive south through the Debeli Brijeg border to Montenegro. Eighty kilometres, about two hours with the crossing.

Dubrovnik Airport for drivers
Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) sits eighteen kilometres south-east of Dubrovnik city, at Čilipi. The terminal is compact; walk from arrivals to the short-stay lot is under a minute. Ryanair, easyJet, Wizz Air, British Airways and the summer charter fleet all fly here; departures cluster in the morning and evening peaks.
The pickup itself is straightforward; the trip is really about the cross-border drive south. Any car on the platform can be booked at DBV as long as the paid Croatia permit tier is selected at checkout. The push on to Budva takes two hours and includes the Debeli Brijeg passport check in both directions.

Where to pick up in Dubrovnik Airport
Pickup is inside the arrivals hall with the driver holding a printed sign. The car is parked in the short-stay lot outside; deposit paperwork and the walk-round happen at the car itself. There is no shuttle bus.
- Dubrovnik Airport (DBV) arrivals hall
- Onward delivery to your Dubrovnik hotel
- Roadside handover at Čilipi centre
- Cavtat waterfront (short drive from the airport)
- Debeli Brijeg border post (for continuing on foot)
- City delivery to a Dubrovnik Old Town address
From the terminal the exit road puts you on the D8 coast highway. North for Dubrovnik in twenty minutes; south for the Debeli Brijeg border and the Montenegrin coast.
Getting there and driving
The DBV to Budva drive is eighty kilometres and about two hours through the Debeli Brijeg border. The Croatian side runs the D8 coastal road, wide and slow. The Montenegrin side picks up at Herceg Novi and stays on the E80 for another sixty kilometres through Kotor to Budva.
The Bosnian corridor at Neum splits the Croatian coast in two, but the DBV to Budva route stays south of it; no extra border to worry about. Fuel stations sit at both ends of the border zone and at Čilipi near the airport itself. Fill up on the Croatian side before crossing if the tank is under a third.

Parking in Dubrovnik Airport
The airport has short-stay and long-stay paid lots; on a rental pickup you never park here yourself. The supplier's car is waiting in the short-stay lot when you land.
Departing renters usually get airport drop-off included in the price; the driver meets you at the terminal with time before the flight, does the walk-round at the car, and takes it back.
Scenic drives and day trips
The natural first drive is south along the D8 to Herceg Novi, the first Montenegrin coast town, twenty minutes past the border. Onward to Kotor, on to Budva, or up the Vrmac tunnel to Tivat and back on the ferry.
The other side of the trip is Dubrovnik itself: twenty minutes north of the airport. If a day in the walled city is on the plan, park in the Pile Gate lot or at Port Gruž and walk in. The old city inside the walls is car-free.

Insurance and deposit
Every booking on the platform includes free third-party liability cover with a small refundable deposit at pickup. The DBV to Budva drive crosses a border with a rental car, and that is exactly where the paid tiers earn their keep: if anything happens on the Croatian side the paperwork can get tangled.
Full Coverage Plus is the tier to pick for a border crossing: it is the only tier that holds no deposit, and it adds glass, lamps and wheel cover on both sides. Tiers and rules are on the insurance page.
For the DBV-to-Budva run a mid-size diesel is the natural pick, and the Peugeot 308 BlueHDi covers the two hours comfortably: quiet at motorway speed on the Croatian coast highway, a big enough boot for a family with luggage, and a fuel range that clears the whole crossing on one tank.
Pick up the keys and drive
Choose a car with the Croatia permit tier, land at DBV, and drive south. Free cancellation on most cars keeps the plan flexible if the flight moves or the border queue times out.
Dubrovnik Airport car rental FAQ
Renter questions about a Dubrovnik Airport pickup: what the Debeli Brijeg crossing feels like, whether the drive is worth it versus flying to Tivat, and what documents to have ready at the border.
How long does the border crossing at Debeli Brijeg take?
Ten minutes off-peak, up to an hour in summer between eleven and one. Passports are checked on both sides; the rental car needs a green card which the supplier arranges at handover.
How long is the drive to Budva?
Eighty kilometres and about two hours from DBV, including the border. Leaving the airport before nine or after seven cuts the wait to nothing; the drive itself is smooth.
Do I need anything special to drive a rental across the border?
Passport, driving licence, the rental voucher, and the paid Croatia permit tier selected at checkout. The supplier issues a green card at handover if the car does not already have one. Everything else is standard.
Is DBV cheaper than Tivat overall?
Sometimes. The DBV route from northern Europe often has cheaper fares than Tivat; the drive south adds two hours and the paid permit tier. Do the maths if the DBV fare saves more than a hundred euros; otherwise stick with Tivat.
Can I drop the car back at DBV?
Yes on most cars, subject to a one-way fee shown at checkout. If the return leg is via Tivat or Podgorica instead, that also works; the supplier handles the drop-off point flexibly.
Can I use the same rental to explore Dubrovnik itself?
Yes. Park at Port Gruž or the Pile Gate lots and walk into the Old Town; both are paid by the hour with a daily cap. The old city inside the walls is pedestrian only.
What if my flight to DBV is delayed?
Give the supplier the flight number and they track it. The driver stays until the flight lands, however late. Most suppliers absorb up to three hours of delay at no charge.
Is there fuel on the way to the border?
Yes. Two Croatian stations near Čilipi and one more at the border approach at Vitaljina. The first Montenegrin station is inside Igalo, ten kilometres past the crossing.
