Tivat Airport for drivers

TIV is a small single-terminal airport that handles most of the leisure traffic on the Boka Bay. Ryanair, Wizz Air, Air Serbia, easyJet and the summer charter fleet all fly here; departures cluster in the morning and mid-afternoon, arrivals stagger through the day. The rental car park sits inside the terminal perimeter, seventy metres from the door.

From the airport, three roads open up. The coast road south puts you in Budva in twenty-five minutes; the road north via the Vrmac tunnel puts you in Kotor in fifteen minutes; and the ferry crossing at Lepetane is the fast way to Herceg Novi and the Croatian border.

Where to pick up at Tivat Airport

Pickup is inside the arrivals hall, not at a rental desk. Your driver is standing near the exit doors with a printed sign that has your name on it; no shuttle bus, no offsite counter. Deposit paperwork and the walk-round happen at the car itself, in the terminal car park.

  • Tivat Airport (TIV) arrivals hall
  • Free onward delivery to your Budva hotel (paid drivers)
  • Hotel Regent inside Porto Montenegro
  • Tivat bus terminal (short-hop drop-off)
  • Port of Lepetane (Herceg Novi crossing)
  • City delivery to any address in Tivat commune

Once the paperwork is done at the car itself, you drive out under a barrier that opens on the plate. The exit road puts you on the coast road; south for Budva, north for the tunnel to Kotor.

Getting there and driving

The airport connects to Budva by a straight twenty-two kilometres of coast road through Jaz, about twenty-five minutes outside summer. In July and August the same drive can double when the ferry queue at Lepetane spills back onto the road; leaving the airport before nine or after eight in the evening keeps it honest. From Kotor, the tunnel run north out of the airport is nine kilometres and fifteen minutes.

The airport road has a short 60 km/h stretch through town before it opens onto the coast strip. Speed cameras sit on the approach to Sveti Stefan; the same road runs south to Petrovac and then dives under Sozina bypass toward Bar. Fuel stations sit at both ends of the airport perimeter road.

Parking at Tivat Airport

The airport has two car parks: short-stay for handovers and departing owners, long-stay a hundred metres further out. Rates are hourly for the short lot and daily for the long. On rental pickup you never park here yourself; the supplier's car is already in the short lot when you land.

Departing renters usually get the airport drop-off included in the price on most cars. If the flight is early, the driver meets you at the terminal at the agreed time, does the walk-round in the car park, and you head straight to check-in.

Scenic drives and day trips

From the airport the natural first drive is south along the coast: past Jaz to Budva, on to Sveti Stefan, Pržno and Petrovac. Twenty-five minutes to Budva, forty to Petrovac, ninety to Bar via the Sozina bypass. If Ulcinj and the Albanian border is on the plan, budget two and a half hours out from the airport.

North of the airport, the Vrmac tunnel opens the whole bay road: fifteen minutes to Kotor, another twenty round the fjord to Perast. The ferry at Lepetane crosses to Herceg Novi in ten minutes on the water and shaves half an hour off the E80 loop; a full round-the-bay day out from the airport is easy in a single afternoon.

Insurance and deposit

Every booking on the platform includes free third-party liability cover with a small refundable deposit at pickup. Careful driving on the coast road inside town rarely tests it; the risk is on the mountain climb to Cetinje and the coastal potholes south of Ulcinj.

Full Coverage limits your liability for accident damage and adds glass, lamps and wheel cover, though the deposit is still held at pickup; Full Coverage Plus removes the deposit entirely, the pick if a Croatian border-crossing is on the plan. Tiers and rules are laid out on the insurance page.

For most airport pickups a compact hatch is the pick, and the Renault Clio is the default: five doors, a boot big enough for two weeks of cabin bags, and the size to slip into the Budva seafront bays without a fight.

Tivat Airport car rental FAQ

The questions renters ask about a Tivat Airport pickup: how the handover actually works, what to do if the flight is late, and how long it takes to drive to Budva or Kotor after landing.

Where exactly do I meet the driver at Tivat Airport?

Inside the arrivals hall, near the exit doors. The driver is holding a printed sign with your name on it. The car is parked in the short-stay lot right outside the terminal; there is no shuttle bus.

How long does the handover take?

Usually inside ten minutes. Paperwork is signed at the car itself, the walk-round takes a few minutes, and then you drive out under a plate-reader barrier.

What if my flight is delayed?

Give the supplier the flight number when you book and they track it. The driver stays until the flight lands, however late. Most suppliers on the platform absorb up to three hours of delay at no charge; beyond that a waiting fee may apply.

How long is the drive to Budva?

Twenty-two kilometres, about twenty-five minutes outside summer. In July and August the drive can double when the ferry queue at Lepetane backs onto the coast road; the eleven-to-one and four-to-six windows are the worst.

Can I drop the car back at Tivat Airport, or does it have to go somewhere else?

Drop-off at Tivat Airport is available on most cars for the same handover point in reverse. Give the supplier your departure time; the driver meets you at the terminal at the agreed slot.

Can I drive to Croatia or Bosnia from Tivat?

Yes with a paid cross-border permit at checkout. The Debeli Brijeg crossing is the main route to Dubrovnik; the Bosnia entry is through Trebinje. Cross-border drop-off (leaving the car outside Montenegro) is not supported.

Do I need a credit card?

No. Most cars can be booked without a credit card. The advance payment is settled online; cash, debit card and crypto are accepted at pickup. A credit card is only needed for the deposit hold on the cars that ask for one, so filter for it if that matters.

Is there a fuel station on the way out?

Yes. Two petrol stations sit within a kilometre of the terminal on the coast road. Fill up before heading over the Cetinje mountain if the tank is under half; the next reliable one is at the top of the switchback.
