Podgorica is Montenegro's capital and its transport hub. Pickup happens at the Hilton and Podgorica hotels in the centre, at the two shopping malls with their large lots, at the railway station, and at Podgorica Airport twelve kilometres to the south. Podgorica for drivers

Podgorica is a flat modern city sat on the confluence of two rivers, with a small old town core and modern neighbourhoods spreading in every direction. The rental map covers the whole ring: the airport in the south, the Mall of Montenegro and Big Fashion mall on the western edge, the Hilton and the Podgorica hotels in the centre, and the railway station on the northern side.

For most Podgorica trips a compact hatch is right. The city grid is easy and the traffic outside rush hour flows well; a small car parks anywhere. The push south to Bar and the coast is the shortest inland drive at forty-five minutes on the Sozina bypass.

Where to pick up in Podgorica

Pickup is at the airport for arrivals, or at your hotel or a mall lot inside town for a stay-based rental. Free delivery is included on most cars anywhere inside the city ring road.

  • Podgorica Airport (TGD) arrivals hall
  • Free delivery to your Podgorica hotel or apartment
  • Hotel Hilton Crna Gora in the centre
  • Hotel Podgorica by the river
  • Mall of Montenegro car park (western side)
  • Podgorica railway station

From the centre the driving splits three ways. The Sozina tunnel south leads to Bar and the coast in forty-five minutes. The M2 west heads to Cetinje and Kotor; the M18 north climbs into the mountains toward Kolašin and the Tara canyon.

Getting there and driving

Most Podgorica rentals arrive from a Budva stay via the Sozina bypass, sixty-five kilometres in about an hour. From the airport the run into town is twelve kilometres and fifteen minutes; from Nikšić inland the M2 covers sixty kilometres in an hour.

The city ring road is signed for airport, coast, and Nikšić; the exits fork clearly. Inside town the grid is wide with paid on-street bays around the centre. Fuel stations sit at every entry to the city and on the airport road.

Parking in Podgorica

Central Podgorica parking is paid by hourly tariff with a daily cap. The Mall of Montenegro lot and the Big Fashion lot are the fallback options: both free for the first two hours and cheap after that, five minutes from the centre by foot.

Hotels include parking in the room rate; anyone in an apartment near the centre usually gets one paid slot per unit through the block. The airport short-stay lot is metered by the hour; long-stay is a hundred metres further out with a daily rate.

Scenic drives and day trips

The natural half-day out is Ostrog monastery: forty-five minutes north up the mountain, an hour at the site, back before lunch. The full-day option is Skadar Lake: south to Virpazar, a boat trip through the water-lily channels, back through the Skadar villages. Two hours of driving, half a day with stops.

The mountain option is the Tara canyon and Durmitor: north on the M18 through Kolašin, up onto the plateau to Žabljak. Two and a half hours each way; do it as a two-night trip if snow is on the ground, or a long day out in the summer. The road north has fuel at Kolašin and again at Žabljak.

Insurance and deposit

Every booking on the platform includes free third-party liability cover with a small refundable deposit at pickup. Podgorica city driving rarely tests the base level; the risk is on the mountain climb to Ostrog and on the northern M18 where switchbacks and roadworks catch alloys.

Full Coverage limits your liability for accident damage and adds glass, lamps and wheel cover on the mountain roads, though the deposit is still held at pickup; Full Coverage Plus removes the deposit entirely, worth it for a full inland-trip week or a border-crossing drive. Tiers and rules are on the insurance page.

For a Podgorica-based trip the VW Golf diesel is the pick: comfortable on the flat city drive, quiet on the Sozina tunnel push to the coast, and the DSG picks the right gear on the Ostrog switchbacks before you think about it.

Pick up the keys and drive

Choose a car, agree a slot at the airport or in town, and drive. Free cancellation on most cars keeps the plan flexible if a flight moves or the mountain weather closes in.

Podgorica car rental FAQ

Renter questions about a Podgorica pickup: how the airport handover works, whether the mall lots are worth using, and what winter driving to the north looks like.

How long is the drive from Budva to Podgorica?

Sixty-five kilometres and about an hour through the Sozina tunnel. The bypass is smooth and stays clear outside summer rush hours.

Where do I meet the driver at Podgorica Airport?

Inside the arrivals hall with a printed sign. The car is parked at the short-stay lot right outside the terminal; there is no shuttle.

Is central parking easy?

Yes off-peak; tight between eleven and one. The Mall of Montenegro and Big Fashion lots on the western edge are the reliable fallback: free for two hours, a fifteen-minute walk in.

Can I drive to Ostrog monastery and back in a morning?

Yes. Forty-five minutes each way and an hour at the site is a comfortable three-hour round trip. The last five kilometres of the upper access road are hairpins; take them slowly and expect buses coming down.

How long is the drive to Durmitor from Podgorica?

Two and a half hours through Kolašin on the M18. Fuel at Kolašin, then again at Žabljak on the plateau. A long day trip in summer; a two-night stay when there is snow.

Can I drive to Albania from Podgorica?

Yes with the paid cross-border permit at checkout. The Božaj crossing at Tuzi is thirty kilometres south of the city; from the border Shkodra is another twenty minutes.

Are the mountain roads open in winter?

The M18 to Kolašin stays open all year; the plateau road to Žabljak sometimes closes for a day after heavy snow. Winter tyres are required by law from November 15.

Can I drop the car in Budva or Kotor?

Yes. One-way drop-off inside Montenegro is available on most cars for a small fee shown at checkout. Cross-border drop-off is not supported.
