Podgorica from Budva

One hour inland to the capital — Lake Skadar and pelicans along the way.

Podgorica — 65 km from the Sand

Montenegro's capital sits an hour inland from the riviera. Most tourists skip it entirely, heading straight for the coast. That is understandable — but it means missing a genuinely interesting city that shows you a completely different side of the country.

The architecture tells the story: Ottoman-era bridges, socialist apartment blocks, glass-fronted shopping centres, and the cable-stayed Millennium Bridge all share the skyline. It is messy and real. The cafe culture is excellent. Locals drink espresso for hours along Hercegovačka street, and nobody is in a rush.

Podgorica Millennium Bridge

Budget tip: restaurant prices in Podgorica run about 30-40% less than Budva's tourist strip. A full grilled meat platter with sides and local beer costs around €8–10 at a neighbourhood konoba.

What to See

Sat-Kula, the Ottoman clock tower, still stands in the old Stara Varoš quarter. The Duklja archaeological site dates back roughly 2,000 years. For shopping, the Delta City mall covers mainstream brands while the Stara Varoš neighbourhood hides independent galleries and craft shops. Wine lovers should try Podgorica's tasting rooms — Montenegro's Crmnica wine region starts just south of the city.

Side Trips from Podgorica

Skadar Lake

The largest lake in the Balkans straddles the Montenegro-Albania border, 30 minutes south of the city. National Park status protects its wetlands, where Dalmatian pelicans, herons, and 270 other bird species breed. Boat tours from Virpazar cost around €15–20 per person. Pack a picnic — lakeside restaurants are limited and overpriced.

Danilovgrad

A river town 30 minutes west with a mellow vibe. The Zeta River beaches draw locals on hot days. Nearby Zdrebaonik Monastery sits in quiet forest. If you are driving to Nikšić or the mountains, it makes a natural lunch stop.

Žabljak

Žabljak sits at 1,500 metres in the Durmitor mountain range, about 170 km north of Podgorica. Winter skiing, summer hiking, and the Tara River Canyon — the deepest in Europe — make it a year-round draw. The drive up is spectacular but allow three hours.
