Ulcinj for drivers

Ulcinj is two towns: the walled Ottoman-era old town on a promontory above the water, and the modern strip below leading east toward the twelve-kilometre sand beach of Velika Plaža. The rental map covers both plus the Ada Bojana river-mouth island where kitesurfers set up in summer.

A compact hatch is easiest on the town lanes above the sea; the road out to Ada Bojana is single-track patched tarmac. Any inland detour to the Sasko Lake or the salt pans takes a slightly higher car. The push over the border to Shkodra in Albania is thirty kilometres and about forty minutes.

Where to pick up in Ulcinj

Pickup is usually at your hotel above the small beach, or at one of the Velika Plaža beach clubs if you are staying out there. The Otrant lot on the town side is the busiest handover point in summer.

  • Free delivery to your Ulcinj town hotel or apartment
  • Hotel Otrant on the town beach
  • Hotel Albatros at the western end
  • Hotel Ada Bojana on the river-mouth island
  • Ulcinj bus terminal in town centre
  • Post Office square (central handover point)

From the town, the road east runs the length of Velika Plaža in twenty minutes. The turn to Ada Bojana is signed halfway along; the road inland to Sasko Lake climbs behind the beach in about half an hour.

Getting there and driving

Most Ulcinj rentals arrive from a Budva stay via the Sozina bypass and the coast road, seventy-five kilometres in an hour and a quarter. From Podgorica Airport the run is ninety-five kilometres and an hour and a half through Bar. The town itself is easy to reach: the E851 drops off the bypass into the centre.

The town lanes above the Small Beach are one-way and slow, with parking bays paid by kiosk. The road out to Velika Plaža stays wide until the beach club strip; from there it narrows to single-track down to Ada Bojana. Fuel stations sit at both ends of Ulcinj town and at the Sukobin border approach.

Parking in Ulcinj

The Otrant lot is the largest paid car park in Ulcinj and handles overflow from the town. Hotel guests have their own bays; the promenade above Small Beach has an on-street paid strip that fills first in July and August.

Velika Plaža parking is scattered: each beach club has its own lot behind the sand, most of them paid, some free with a food or drink minimum. Ada Bojana has one central paid area at the head of the island; the river-mouth restaurants have their own small lots.

Scenic drives and day trips

The obvious run south is along the whole length of Velika Plaža, stopping at one of the beach clubs for lunch. Twelve kilometres of sand, an hour of gentle driving with photo stops, and back before dinner. The onward option is Ada Bojana and the seafood konobas at the river mouth.

The cross-border option is Shkodra in Albania: thirty kilometres and forty minutes from the town, through the Sukobin crossing. The city has an Ottoman castle above it and a small lakeside strip. Budget an extra thirty minutes at the border in summer and buy the paid Albania permit tier at checkout.

Insurance and deposit

Every booking on the platform includes free third-party liability cover with a small refundable deposit at pickup. Ulcinj town driving is easy on flat coast road; the risk shows up on the road to Ada Bojana and on the Albania crossing where potholes and worn tarmac hit alloys and undercarriage.

Full Coverage limits your liability for accident damage and adds glass, lamps and wheel cover, though the deposit is still held at pickup; Full Coverage Plus removes the deposit entirely, worth it for anyone crossing to Albania. Tiers and rules are on the insurance page.

For an Ulcinj rental a slightly higher car takes the edge off the Ada Bojana road, and the Kia Stonic is the natural pick: the raised ride handles the patched tarmac and the boot swallows a beach day and a change of clothes without a squeeze.

Pick up the keys and drive

Choose a car, agree a slot at the beach or the border, and start driving. Free cancellation on most cars keeps the plan flexible if the sand shifts the timing.

Ulcinj car rental FAQ

Renter questions about an Ulcinj pickup: how the Albania crossing works, whether a small car handles the Ada Bojana road, and what the summer traffic looks like on Velika Plaža.

Can I drive from Ulcinj across to Albania?

Yes with the paid cross-border permit tier at checkout. Sukobin to the Albanian side is fifteen minutes off-peak and forty-five in high summer. Shkodra city is a straight forty minutes from the border on the Albanian side.

Is the road to Ada Bojana drivable in a small car?

Yes but slowly. The last section is patched tarmac ending on a wooden bridge with a 30 km/h limit. A compact hatch or a small crossover handles it easily; a taller SUV feels wide on the bridge.

How long is the drive from Budva to Ulcinj?

Seventy-five kilometres, about an hour and a quarter through the Sozina bypass. In July and August allow an extra thirty minutes if you drive between eleven and one, or between five and eight; the Bar bypass exits back up.

Where do I park in Ulcinj Old Town?

On the paid strip along the promenade above the Small Beach. It fills first each morning; the Otrant lot is the fallback, a five-minute walk from the Old Town gate.

Can I drop the car in Bar or Budva?

Yes. One-way drop-off inside Montenegro is available on most cars for a small fee shown at checkout. Cross-border drop-off (into Albania) is not supported.

What is Velika Plaža parking like in high summer?

Each beach club has its own lot behind the sand; the westernmost lots turn over faster than the middle ones. Arrive before eleven or after four; between those hours expect a wait.

Are there fuel stations on the drive south?

Yes. Two in Ulcinj town, one on the Bar side, one at the Sukobin approach for the border. The Albanian side has stations every ten kilometres from the crossing.

Is the Sasko Lake road worth driving?

Yes if birds are on the plan. The inland detour is thirty kilometres each way, mostly patched tarmac; the return trip takes half a morning. A slightly higher car helps on the last five kilometres.
